Nitrogen Sensing Solutions, a startup from Leiria that is working towards a sustainable future for global food supply
Technology company incubated at Startup Leiria develops internationally award-winning biosensors for water analysis, focused on sustainable aquaculture and aimed at the global market
Nitrogen Sensing Solutions (NS2), one of the most promising technological start-ups incubated at Startup Leiria, was born from the vision of transforming decades of scientific research into practical solutions for global challenges.
With a team of five, the company is revolutionising the way harmful substances are monitored in liquid media.
NOxAqua, developed by Gabriela Almeida, partner, co-founder, CEO and research director, is the result of 20 years of research.
This innovative bio-sensor system allows real-time analyses of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, reliably, despite issues such as turbidity or salinity in the water.
The excellence of the work was recognised internationally, winning third place in the ‘929 Challenge’ technology competition in Macau at the beginning of November.
The system created by NS2 consists of disposable test strips and portable readers and allows for analyses in the field, instantly digitising the results on smart devices or existing control systems.
‘In aquatic environments, these nutrients are toxic, for example, to fish and other animal life,’ explains Gabriela Almeida.
